This first tiny project is *so* simplistic, I doubt anyone should find
any difficulty in making/installing it. That's relative to my experience
of course, and I have been wrong in the past when it comes to estimating
the 'electrical prowess' of those I do not know.[like, I refrain from
doing it anymore!!]
Then again, there may be those who just don't have the
soldering-iron....[skill, glue, understanding, insulation-tape]...or even
the help of a knowledgeable friend to give them a hand with this...and
seeing as I *really do* think it's worth having one, taking into account
such things as postage-costs, cost of parts, etc. etc.....
I'm prepared to make it for you!
I'll even make it to your choice of specification!
Remember though, the cheapest way to get one going, [and this would be
the hacker's choice!!], is to buy the components (less than $2.00), and
'hard-wire' it into your amp.....and I need not help these folk out!!
However, the logistical nightmare of me only being one singular
formation of matter, living where I do, and the truly horrendous amount of
postage that would be entailed getting your amp to my place...and back to
you again, means that I can only install this circuit in the amps of
people who are either mad enough to pay the postage, or those who are
fortunate enough to live close by.....or perhaps find themselves
travelling on the Mt. Lindesay Highway past my place, with their amps in
the boot of their car!!!
!BUT!
Stand-alone units that hook up to your stereo )externally( are a
distinct possibility, and as a matter of fact, would be 'as per' the one I
did for all at MD.....with some variations to suit individual
requirements. Pricing stuff like this, is a real pain, and obviously, the
quantity required greatly affects the unit cost....but I'm sure the table
below might find ?some? interested people.....
Base Unit: In a ABS-case with a little hole in it
to adjust the trimpot, five 'flying'
leads with tinned-ends for hooking up to
the amp/speakers, switched 3.5mm or
6.5mm stereo jack that'll disconnect the
speakers when you plug in the headphones
....ready to go!!
$6.00 + postage(?)
Variations:
Base Unit with;
Multiturn 'Cermet' pot ..... add $1.40
Pot [carbon type] with shaft " $1.40
Knob for the shaft ......... " $1.00
If you don't like the idea of 'flying'
leads, then I'll terminate 2 of them
a screwdown strip connector for..$0.40
***I don't think the wirewound pot I mention in the doc is economically
viable....do it yourself!!!***
***The reason I say I'll terminate 2 wires only, is because *most*
amplifier output connectors actually are built for plain tinned ends,
and the way the unit hooks up, needs only the 2 feeds to the speakers to
be held securely, as the common-line to the speakers stay where they
are...on the amp.***
***If your speaker-leads have plugs on the amp-end of them, then it's
probably easiest to cut them off about 30cm from the plug, and use a
five-way piece of terminal block to hook it all up. Just let me know if
this is the case, and I'll include the 5-way block..... $1.00 ***
***Unit case dimensions >L=83mm x H=30mm x W=54mm ***
***All units come with full hook-up information scribbled [legibly] on a
piece of paper, and with a couple of strips of double-sided tape to
stick-it down ?some-where?, and a couple of small cable-ties.***
***Note that these )external( hook-up units leave your 'normal' headphone
jack fully operational, and your amp intact. However, as the unit is
deriving it's signal from the speaker-connectors, plugging headphones
into the 'normal' jack will disable not only your speakers, but the unit
itself as well!!***
I doubt very much, because of the circuit's design/nature, that you'd
ever have any trouble with it. If you kept pushing the 'ergs' at it, by
turning your amp's volume-knob up, then your headphone's drivers are going
to bite the dust first. If you were in a particularly sadistic mood, I
suppose even after this event, you could keep advancing the volume until
the 10-ohm 0.5watt resistors started smoking, which usually happens 10
seconds before they go 'open circuit'. You'd want to be fairly nuts to do
this though.
I've run this set-up on my amp for the past half-year, and it's given me
nothing but pleasure the whole time. I'm sure it will do the same for
other Amigans!!!
